Today marks the anniversary of Arthur Conan Doyle’s birth. While his creation, Sherlock Holmes, has inspired hundreds of adaptations in many media (in several of which, no one finds it weird that a modern man is named Sherlock Holmes) I think we can all agree that these tributes found their apex in the following theme song.

Warning: this is strangely catchy, oddly stirring, and will stay in your head for the rest of your life.

Dad: Sure, I would usually have one for taking to parties and one that was a keeper….guess which ones you’re getting *winks at me*

Here’s a link to the Victoria and First Peoples Day petition. I’m not sure what to make of it myself. I’d be okay with dropping the Victoria bit altogether in favour of having First Peoples Day as a stand alone holiday. Apart from the obviously problematic juxtaposition of simultaneously celebrating the crown with the Indigenous Peoples of Canada, it is also worth noting that they don’t even celebrate ‘Victoria’ day in England.

*For what it’s worth Thomas King, Margaret Atwood, and Elizabeth May have all signed the petition - just an interesting little fact, not an attempt to sway.

Rare first take of ‘Frustration’ by Vancouver’s The Painted Ship (1966). Says William Hay: “The band did not like the tempo and they complained that my vocals were too weird, so we take 2 which is the one on the record.”

Interesting alternate version of the song which pretty much put Vancouver on the garage rock map. I had the excellent fortune to interview singer William Hay a few years ago (listen here.)
